Neurogenic Bladder
Neurogenic bladder is a dysfunction of the bladder caused by neurologic damage. Any condition that impairs the bladder due to a brain, spinal cord or nerve problem (such as stroke, spinal injury, diabetes, herniated disks, and more) can cause neurogenic bladder. There are many neurologic diseases that can affect the function of bladder. Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and dementia are among the common conditions. Patients can have urinary incontinence (leakage, frequency, urgency) and/or difficulty emptying the bladder. Risk of serious complications is high; however, there are many novel treatments that improve the quality of life of patients affected by these conditions. The specific treatment for neurogenic bladder is determined based on the type and severity of the symptoms, the cause of the nerve damage, and the age and health of the patient.
